Dalzell of Barncroch, John
His estate lay near Kirkcudbright, and he dined with Burns and Syme at the inn in the town when they were on their Galloway tour. Dalzell was a man who liked humour and good company, and the three had 'a very agreeable party'. Dalzell was a close friend of Gordon of Kenmure (with whom Burns and Smye stayed), who sent him a snuff-mull. Dalzell acknowledged the gift, according to Chambers with a verse: "Your present I received, and letter; No compliment could please me better, Ex dono Kenmure I'll put on it And crown it wi' a silver bonnet, - In spite of a' the deils in Your humble servant, John Dalzell."
Burns gave Syme a copy of 'Scots Wha Hae' to give to Dalzell.
