Douglas-Hamilton, Basil William, Lord Daer (1764 94)
The second son of the fourth Earl of Selkirk whose elder brother Sholto, died in infancy. While attending Edinburgh University, Lord Daer lived with Professor Dugald Stewart, with whom he also stayed at the Professor's country home, Catrine, in Ayrshire. It was here that Burns met him when he dined with Stewart on 23rd October 1786, the meeting being the poet's first with a member of the nobility. But Lord Daer was liberal minded. Later, through having friends in France who were concerned in the Revolution, Lord Daer became a warm admirer of it, and was a member of 'The Friends of the People' and an advocate of Parliamentary reform. In the 'Lines on meeting with Lord Daer', Burns said of him: "Nae honest, worthy man need care To meet with noble, youthful Daer, For he but meets a brother."
Of a delicate constitution Lord Daer died in France predeceasing his father.
