Leven, John (d. 1803?)
A Supervisor of Excise in Edinburgh, named in the almanac lists for 1801 as General Supervisor in Edinburgh, and so addressed by Burns, who wrote to him in March 1792 about a consignment of tin over which some irregularity had arisen. The important point about the letter, however, is that, business disposed of, Burns added: 'Mr Mitchell mentioned to you a ballad, which I composed and sung at one of his Excise Court dinners; here it is.... If you honor my ballad by making it one of your bon vivant effusions, it will secure it undoubted celebrity.' The ballad was 'The Deil's awa' wi' th' Exciseman.'
