Lockhart, George
The name of Lockhart, 'merchant and manufacturer', appeared in the first Glasgow Directory, 1787. Chambers conjectured that he lived at Miss Hanna Gray's lodgings 'above the post office, Prince's Street', referred to in the succeeding issue of the Directory, since Burns addressed his one surviving letter to Lockhart at 'Miss Gray's Glasgow'. Dated 18th July 1788, from Mauchline, it deals with the loveliness of the 'Miss Bailies I have seen in Edinburgh', and promises copies of some 'rhming things'. According to Chambers, Burns on hearing Lockhart sing some of his songs fore the first time is supposed to have remarked: 'I'll be hanged if I ever knew half their merits till now!'
