Logan, Major William (d. 1819)
A retired army officer who lived at the house of Park, in Ayr. He was a convivial wit, and a keen violinist. Burns met him at Ayr. The Major lived with his mother and unmarried sister, Susan, for whom Burns had some admiration, sending her a copy of Beattie's poems on New Year's Day 1787, with the lines 'Again the silent wheels of time'. The poet called her father 'thairm-inspiring rattlin' Willie' in the 'Epistle to Major Logan'. The Major latterly suffered from the effects of over-indulgence. When his minister called to see him, that worthy remarked to Logan that it would take great fortitude to bear his sufferings. To which Logan retorted: 'Aye, it would take fiftitude.' At one time in his career, when serving with h 80th Regiment of Foot (Royal Edinburgh Volunteers), he had been a prisoner in America. Describing this experience, he is supposed to have said; 'Plenty to eat and drink, and no parades.'` AddendumIn addition to his earlier service, Logan served with the West Lothian Fencibles from 1794-9 when he became a major.
