Tait, John (1729 1800)
A Writer to the Signet in Edinburgh, he purchased the estate of Harvieston. He met Burns on the introduction of his sister-in-law, Mrs John Chalmers, and invited him to Harvieston. This visit lasted only one day, 27th August 1787 but the poet, at the family's insistence, made a second visit to Harvieston with Dr James Adair in October, when he stayed ten days, John Tait's son, Crawford Tait, was also a friend of Burns.
