Tennant, Charles (1768 1838)
Fourth son of John Tennant of Glenconner by his second marriage. He went to Kilbarchan to learn weaving and is 'wabster Charlie', in the 'Epistle to James Tennant'. He started bleaching near Barrhead, and obtained a patent for the manufacture of chloride of lime, by the hand process. Two years later he got a patent for the dry process, or bleaching powder. He formed the company of Tennant, Knox & Co., for bleaching with these inventions, and built his works in St Rollox, Glasgow.
