Train, Joseph (1779-1852)
His father was land-steward to John Farquhar-Gray of Gilmilnscroft. Joseph, after a weaver's apprenticeship and service in the army, where he attracted the notice of Sir David Hunter Blair, joined the Ayr District of the Excise, as an officer, thanks to the influence of his titled patron. Later, he took over from John Lewars as Supervisor of Dumfries. Train was a keen antiquarian, and Scott drew on his knowledge for several of the 'Waverley' novels. The two kept up a steady correspondence. According to an article in the Glasgow Herald of 22nd February 1896, by Dr W. Wallace, Train supplied Lockhart with information for his book on Burns, including a story of Richmond's which reflected on the character of a Mary Campbell, supposed to be 'Highland Mary': Lockhart did not use the story, but at the same time did not destroy Train's manuscript. Train's gossip has come in for a certain amount of criticism, particularly from those who have tried sentimentally to whitewash Burns. Doubtless much of it is idle chatter. But some of it seems to ring true.
