William Henry, Prince, Duke of Clarence, later William IV (1765-1837)
Third son of George III, he was educated for the Navy. He 'formed a connection' with Mrs Jordan, an actress, to whom he remained faithful for twenty years. Burns referred to them both in 'A Dream': "Young, royal 'tarry-breeks', I learn Ye've lately come athwart her; A glorious galley, stem and stern, Weel rigg'd for Venus's barter."
The death of Princess Charlotte, heiress to the throne, forced him to break with Mrs Jordan, and marry Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen in 1818. In 1793, when war was declared against Republican France, Prince William was unable to get a command, so he turned to politics and supported the Prince of Wales and the Duke of York, in opposition to the King, his father. He became William IV in 1830.
